On the short 35 minute ferry (took about an hour...already on Moroccan time) we met two English kids who had hitchhiked down from London. Their story is one that we would continue to hear our entire trip. They were doing a charity hitch hike (www.lcd.org.uk which basically meant that they had to raise some money (through sponsors or however they chose) and then they had a better reason to get picked up while hitch hiking than just being on holiday and wanting to do it cheaply. We eventually found out that there were about 1200 college students who set out to do this hitch, so we ran into different groups pretty frequently. We arrived in the port city of Tangier and walked the long road out of the port to the bus station. Tangier sounded like a uninteresting city so we got our tickets for the next bus, checked our bags (that took a while to figure out) and walked around a little bit. When we sat back down at the station we realized that all the clocks in Tangier seemed to be an hour behind. Despite being directly south of Spain, Morocco is an hour behind (and later, when Europe had day light savings 2 hours behind). Well it good thing we are experts at waiting.
